I know a few people out there and I'm thinking about moving there.
I know some basic french like "hi my name is....." -- "how are you"
but that's about it...I might take some french classes though.

I'm not really the social type anyways...
but would it be hard to survive in a french speaking community?
or do most of the people speak both french and english?

yes it would be a bad idea ... canada is bilingual, quebec is french only ... i am moving to quebec and called the local spca and a local vet with two questions, cost for dog license and cost for neutering ... i was hung up both times for speaking english ... i had to get someone french to call to get two simple questions answered ... and even if they do speak french, they will not speak it to you to make a point ... i am moving there because i have to, if you have a choice you would be an idiot to move to quebec and not speak french ...

Yes,

If you want a good job in Quebec you need to speak it well. You can get along in english fairly well on the Island of Montreal but once you head out in the country side of Quebec in the towns or in Quebec City everyone is French.

The exception would be the Hotel my brother works at the fairmount they have to speak english to the tourists coming in from the United States and other countries.

Well it would certainly make life a bit more challenging to not know French if you live in Quebec. It depends where in Quebec you go too. Montreal and the west island of Montreal are very English, so you definitely would be able to get by if you lived around there. But most towns in northern Quebec -- forget it. Also, note that regardless of where in Quebec you live, the road signs will only ever be in French, which is a bit ridiculous, especially for people coming from Ontario, New Brunswick and America that don't know any French.

I had a friend move from Vancouver to Quebec, and he couldn't find a job at all (and he had amazing work experience!).

He tried to sign up for a language class which was government-funded and free for canadians, but the people at the school would NOT let him take it because he wasn't from quebec (pointless then, no?)

People in quebec will be snotty with you if you're clearly an native english-speaking person. I'm not trying to be rude or diss quebec in anyway possible, but from personal experience and experiences via my friends, this is what I am led to believe.

If you mean moving to Montreal or Gatineau/Hull, then you will be just fine though you may have a hard time getting a job. However, if you mean moving to "anywhere else in Quebec", I don't think it's a good idea.

It's going to limit your chances of getting work. You will be interview listed behind Francophones and bilinguals.

Since it's in an English-speaking country, yes everybody knows English. It's just French oriented and most people there use French as their main language. I think you should do it if you are really dedicated. Remember, if you don't do it, you might regret it!
