Yes, it's like in Canadian bacon, when the police officer makes the Americans translate their anti-Canadian graffiti to French

This is strictly enforced in Quebec

The answer depends on where in Quebec you are looking. Montreal has a pretty large English population and most people are bilingual, so you won't have a problem speaking English to your neighbours, in stores, etc. if you live in the right area.

However, job options will be extremely limited if you don't speak French. If you have some French, you might be able to swing a customer service job in a predominantly English area (Westmount, West Island, etc.). If your French isn't functional, call centre jobs are pretty much all there is unless you land something very specific.

There are two good English universities in Montreal (McGill and Concordia) so many students come from all over with varying levels of French. The city is also very multicultural so you won't be the only one ill at ease in French. It is highly recommended that you know a little though, if only because most people will assume you understand French a bit. Immigrants coming to Quebec are indeed forced to put their kids into French school (at elementary and high school levels) to protect the language.

It isn't a question of forcing people to speak French, but unless you happen to be talking to someone who understands English, you aren't going to have much of a conversation. It is difficult to find a job if you don't speak the language of the country - and in Quebec, that language is French. There are a few anglo-speaking jobs in Montreal, but not in the rest of La Belle Province.

If you move to Quebec you are forced to attend French Speaking public schools.

There are English parts of Quebec where you can get by fine without French. But as time goes on they are getting smaller. On the other side of the coin, French in Ontario is getting smaller too.

All Government correspondence is in French.

Unless you have a parent who attended school in English, in Quebec, all kids must go to a French speaking school. So, people moving there from other provinces who speak no French must go to school, in French.

And, yes, it is very difficult to get a job. In Montreal, you pretty much need to be bilingual. Same for Ottawa.

If you were going to live and work in Quebec, you would need to speak French, because the first language spoken there is French.

It would be like going to France and not speaking French. If you don't speak that language, then go to another part of Canada.

Ontario is nice ..... http://www.discover-southern-ontario.com/index.html
